STEAM POWER

It is a social enterprise that has been running for five years. Steam Power aims to open doors to diversity stem by changing the negative, preconceived ideas that many young people from the African & African-Caribbean communities have around career choices and opportunities in the field of s.t.e.m

We want to change this!

The lack of diversity in the field, leads many young people, not only the African & African-Caribbean communities, to believe that race, gender, religion or even socio-economic backgrounds, might be a determining factor when it comes to becoming a doctor, architect, engineer and so forth.

We want to change this!

Mobirise
Expose young children,

from as young as eight years old, to the world of s.t.e.m by showing them the contribution of lesser-known scientists from under-represented communities. Through events and workshops, children from these communities can see first-hand, in some cases, how people that look like them have made an impact with inventions that benefit everyone today.

Where did you get inspiration come from?
Where did you get inspiration come from?

We get our inspiration from the creativity of children in Africa who play with self-made toys in the middle of streets….by picking up what looks like trash, they are able to build something that entertains them and surprises adults. If so little that they are to do so much we cannot even begin to imagine what they should be able to do if they have all the necessary resources.

What is your ‘why’ why does your brand need to exist?

1

…There is room for everyone,

the current educational system caters for the child that is exceptionally good at listening, for the child that can sit for long periods of time, for the child that can wait for turns, for the child that can regulate his behaviour, for the child that is academically incline, for the child whose parents believe that formal education is the only way into wealth and great career prospects.
2

…how about the child that learns through movement, that

needs to move in order to absorb new knowledge, the child that needs to touch things, the child that needs to ask questions in the process, the child that is better at being active through his learning, how about the child whose parents are not actively engaged?
3

All children need to believe

that the way they learn has a place in the whole learning process, that has a place in the educational system no matter his family background or socio-economic status.

STEAM POWER

Allows all children regardless of learning style or ability to enjoy the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. We have witnessed children blossoming into great designers when asked to do things that are outside of the box.

Furthermore, the field of STEM lacks diversity and the reason this is happening, is because children from so called minority ethnic backgrounds do not see enough role models that come from the same background as them.

We are not like many tuition providers, whilst many focused entirely on grades, we focus on potential. Potential has no limits. It cannot be graded or be placed in a box. Allowing children to explore is an amazing and interesting journey, it allows self-discovery.

We provide events that foster communication skills, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, resilience, creativity and mindfulness.

Children lead and the adult becomes a ‘facilitator’, eliciting, reasoning and discussing through ‘tailored’ questions.

CSI

Events designed to immerse young children into the world of forensics. CSI events allow young children to meet professionals working for the emergency service such as, the Ambulance service and the police forensic department.

Children really love these events because they are packed with plenty of hands on activities and they are allowed to explore as much as they want.

Short Bio

Rijole Bitata is an educator with over 10 years experience working with children in and around London. Born in Spain to parents form Equatorial Guinea, she has always seen the disparity in opportunities offer to children from working class backgrounds, especially those coming form the African and African-Caribbean communities, and those children coming from middle class households. To allow a fair participation of every young person regardless of socio- economic status, gender or heritage, she has created S.T.E.A.M POWER a social enterprise that aims to open the world of STEM to a more diverse audience. She is currently collaborating with different community groups to allow children and young people to have an insight into a field she believes holds the key to the many problems that many communities face today.
